I’ve been trying hard lately to come up with another story idea for a novel. And failing miserably. I’ve finished my first novel, and sent it off to a publisher, so now I have nothing to do but wait. I already have an outline for one other novel, but I still feel like I should come up with something new and fresh. The problem is, everything I’m coming up with is old and done. I’ve started about three stories and stopped after the first chapter, because they weren’t compelling enough to finis.

For me, Characters always come first. If I don’t have strong character, I can’t write a story. And lately I can’t come up with any interesting characters. They’re all just so-so interesting. And if the author isn’t interested enough to write about them, imagine what the readers will feel? I’ve been trying every trick I know to come with ideas, but the characters to fill those ideas aren’t working. So I’ll just sit at home and wait for some sort of divine inspiration.
